SOUND OF VINEYARDS

Sound & Light Installation

August 31 – September 8, 2024
Ataol Wine Cellar

Bozcaada, an island renowned for its vineyards and winemaking for centuries, continues its efforts to preserve and pass down this rich heritage to future generations. This project is designed to revisit and reflect on Bozcaada’s deep-rooted history of viticulture and winemaking, with a special focus on the disappearing legacy of the Çavuş grape.

Curated by Zero People, the sound-light installation by Kerem Sülün (A.k.a Skylark) aims to revive the island’s invaluable traditions. The vineyards and winemaking culture, which have been an essential part of Bozcaada’s identity for generations, are now under serious threat due to evolving socio-cultural and economic conditions. Abandoned vineyards, shifting social structures, and disappearing values are some of the key themes explored in this installation.

The exhibition space has been designed to immerse visitors in the sounds of the vineyards and the process of winemaking. The light installation, housed within the historic Ataol Wine Cellar, encourages reflection on the island’s winemaking heritage and its uncertain future. Every visual element is meticulously crafted to merge the sounds and colors of nature with the transformation process of grapes into wine.

Sound of Wineyards – Soun

The sound installation takes the audience through the journey of grapes—from the vineyard to their separation from nature, their arrival at the winery, the production stages, and finally, their transformation into wine. The recorded sounds of these processes are carefully arranged and reconstructed to create an immersive experience.

The light installations carry symbolic references to Bozcaada’s viticulture and festival traditions:

The dominant red light in the space represents the presence of red wine production on the island.

A yellow light in the upper right window pays tribute to the endangered Çavuş grape, whose cultivation has significantly declined.

A bowl-shaped structure positioned opposite the entrance, reflecting moving lights, symbolizes the ghostly presence of grapes from abandoned vineyards.

This installation serves as a sensory tribute to Bozcaada’s heritage, its changing landscape, and the uncertain future of its vineyards.
